First things first: CBN is a cannabinoid.

That puts it into the same category as CBD, THC, CBG, CBC, and about a hundred other compounds.

Yet CBN is unique. For one thing, it’s the cannabinoid that virtually every other cannabinoid eventually degrades into. Both CBD and THC form CBN if they’re heated for long enough.  

CBN vs CBD: what’s the difference?

Compared to CBD, CBN is more powerful, more relaxing, and more psychoactive. While it won’t get anyone high, CBN does seem to have drowsiness-promoting qualities.

Research by the godfather of cannabinoid research himself, Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, explains why. His studies revealed that CBN binds to the endocannabinoid system's CB1 and CB2 receptors. That makes it unlike CBD, which mostly binds to CB2, and unlike THC, which mostly binds to CB1.

Even then, research on CBN remains in its infancy. Clinical trials haven’t yet shown that it does anything for sleep.

Don’t discount CBN too quickly, though. Virtually every known benefit of CBD went through a period where it was yet to be validated by science. Before CBD was even discovered, ancient cultures around the world had been enjoying it (via hemp flower) for thousands of years!
