cbd labels: understanding the ingredients in your favorite products

If you’re someone unfamiliar with the world of CBD and begin browsing Pachamama’s product shop, you may encounter words, phrases and terminology that you’ve never seen before. What is a Broad Spectrum CBD product, and how does it differ from a Full Spectrum product? To help CBD beginners, we’ve compiled a list of some common CBD words and phrases you’re sure to encounter on CBD labels — so take a look to better educate yourself.

 CBD: Acronym for cannabidiol, a cannabinoid found in cannabis plants.

THC: Acronym for tetrahydrocannabinol, a cannabinoid found in cannabis that produces the high from using marijuana.

Cannabinoid: Molecules produced by a cannabis plant.

Terpene: Organic compounds that produce the aromatic oils in the hemp plant. They can also be of benefit to the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

Broad Spectrum: A CBD product that contains other cannabinoids and terpenes, with zero trace of THC.

Full Spectrum: A CBD product that contains other cannabinoids and terpenes including trace amounts of THC.

Isolate: A CBD product that contains only CBD, no other cannabinoids or terpenes.

Hemp: Under United States law, a cannabis plant that contains 0.3% THC content or less is defined as hemp. As of the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp can now be legally grown in the United States.

Marijuana: In contrast to hemp, under United States law, a cannabis plant with 0.3% THC or more is defined as marijuana. Marijuana is still illegal to grow under U.S. federal law, although many states have legalized the medicinal and recreational use and sale of it.

Hemp oil: CBD oil made from a hemp plant, as opposed to a marijuana plant.

Sublingual: A CBD product that’s meant to be applied under the tongue.

Tincture: A CBD product that’s meant to be used sublingually, orally or topically.

Topical: A CBD product that’s meant to be rubbed into skin like a cream.

Certificate of Analysis: A certificate or report from a laboratory to verify that a product has been tested to ensure the safety and label accuracy of a product.

Bioavailability: Typically describes how much of the product will be absorbed into a person’s bloodstream.

CBD Extract: A thick, oily substance extracted from hemp or marijuana. It usually contains other cannabinoids and terpenes.

Decarboxylation: The process of heating marijuana or hemp to activate the cannabinoids so they can bind to a person’s cannabinoid receptors located throughout the body.

Single Origin: Means that all products derived from the same farm and family of plants to ensure that the products are consistent.
