are cbd companies all using the same hemp farm?
When making great wine, all of the grapes must come from a specific region. Vintners learned long ago that the best way to ensure a consistent product is to work with the same farmers from the same regions year in and year out. This helps deliver a product consumers expect. It’s a lesson that we think the CBD industry could learn something from, and one that we’ve already put into practice here at Pachamama.
This is how single-origin hemp helps us make the highest-quality CBD possible.
why single-origin?
There’s a huge variation in quality across CBD products on the market, and a lot of that comes down to where the hemp was sourced from. The 2018 Hemp Bill legalized the crop nationwide, which set the stage for the booming CBD industry thanks to more farms growing it. So, why aren’t more CBD-makers taking a page out of the book of vinification and building lasting relationships with the farmers who are such a key part of their business?
To best answer that question, we decided to lead the way in the single-origin hemp revolution.
Single-origin means all the crops used to make a product come from the same farm and strain. It’s a pretty simple concept, really. And while single-origin has become an indicator of quality for things like coffee and wine, the descriptor hasn’t fully made its way to the mass CBD market. We’re changing that.
Many CBD brands buy up as much hemp as they can get their hands on, which allows them to produce as much CBD as possible. Doing this means sourcing many different varieties of hemp from numerous farms across several states. All this hemp is then thrown together and processed, resulting in a startlingly unpredictable product. While it’s not impossible to guarantee consistency when making CBD this way, it certainly is difficult. CBD produced this way can have wildly varying effects from batch to batch, because there is little to no consistency in the hemp that the CBD comes from. Not only that, but it also makes it difficult to trace the source of any contaminants back to the point of origin.
When Pachamama started making CBD, we looked at this trend of bulk-buying hemp and knew there had to be a better way. So we set out to do things a little bit differently than everyone else. It’s why all of our hemp comes from one farmer and one farm in Colorado, which results in a truly single-origin line of CBD products. But why does that matter? For starters, sourcing all of our hemp from the same place gives us an unprecedented level of quality control over our product. Which, in turn, allows us to bring our community the best CBD products.
proven purity
We’ve always known the hemp farm we work with is something special, and once we received the Clean Label Project’s Purity Award, we were ecstatic to learn that the experts agreed.
The Clean Label Project is a non-profit organization focused on educating consumers on what’s actually in the products they regularly use. They team up with some of the best labs in the country to test everything from pet food to protein powder in order to determine which brands make the safest products. In 2019, they added CBD to their slate of product categories for the first time, evaluating 242 of the most popular CBD products on the market.
Their discoveries? Beyond alarming, with many of the brands they tested having lead concentrations above those recorded in the Flint water crisis, as well as huge discrepancies between the advertised levels of CBD and how much the product actually contained.
But it's not all bad news for CBD-lovers. The Clean Label Project discovered there are at least a few CBD brands that stand above the rest when it comes to making high-quality, safe and effective CBD products. Pachamama is proud to be among those brands. Receiving the Purity Award from the Clean Label Project is a huge honor to us, and proves what we’ve known all along: Our commitment to single-origin hemp and our proprietary chemical-free CBD extraction method is absolutely the best way to make CBD.
